Ballads have long captured the hearts and imagination of songsters\\, storytellers\\, and listeners\\, including award-winning illustrator Charles Vess. In 1993 Vess was inspired to illustrate the ballads he had loved to listen to for so many years. He worked with several award-winning and ballad-loving fantasy authors to develop scripts and compiled a series of beautifully illustrated comics\\, which he published in The Book of Ballads. \\nThe exhibit\\, Charles Vess: The Book of Ballads\\, features seven ballads reimagined by some of the greatest fantasy writers of our time. The featured comics\\, including “The False Knight on the Road” by Neil Gaiman\\, “Thomas the Rhymer” by Sharyn McCrumb\\, and “Barbara Allen” by Midori Snyder\\, are an excellent introduction to traditional ballads for those not yet familiar and a special treat for those who already are. The exhibit also explores the tradition of ballad singing in Appalachia and traces the origin of each ballad and its journey through time. After all\\, singing is one way to keep ballads alive\\, art is another. \\nAbout Charles Vess\\n \\nCharles Vess is a well-known illustrator of mythic fiction. Born in Virginia\\, he began his career working on Marvel’s “Spider-Man” followed by work for other graphic novels and illustrated books at publishing houses such as Tor\\, Harper\\, Abrams\\, and Subterranean Press while living in New York City. \\nSome favorite collaborations include Ursula K. Over the years he has also worked extensively with British writer Neil Gaiman (Sandman)\\, including their novel Stardust\\, which was made into a major film. \\nIn 2022 his first novel\\, The Queen of Summer’s Twilight (NewCon Press) was published. Set in Scotland as well as across the border into Faerie it is based on the ancient ballad of Tam-Lin. \\nAnother favorite is Walking Through the Landscape of Faerie (Faerie Magazine) a book of art\\, story and poetry designed by Vess with contributions from many of his favorite writers. Hosted by Kris Truelsen\\, the popular re-imagining of the classic WCYB program will serve as the official 25th Anniversary Celebration during the festival\\, with musical guests Cruz Contreras & The Black Lillies\\, Trousdale\\, and The Band Loula. \\nRadio Bristol’s Farm and Fun Time will be a celebration of the last 25 years of Bristol Rhythm\\, while looking ahead to the future. Attendees of the 25th Anniversary Celebration can look forward to an exciting show of high-energy up-and-coming artists and festival favorites\\, and more. Elected officials\\, festival organizers\\, and festival supporters from the past 25 years will be in attendance for recognition and the reading of special proclamations. \\nAdmission to Radio Bristol’s Farm and Fun Time is included with the purchase of a VIP or GA ticket to Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion. \\n\\n \\nRadio Bristol’s Farm and Fun Time is a re-imagining of the classic WCYB Radio program of the same name that aired in the 1940s and 1950s. Radio Bristol’s Farm and Fun Time broadcasts live before a studio audience and recorded for television syndication on more than 143 PBS channels across the United States. It can be accessed on 100.1 FM in the Bristol area\\, or online at ListenRadioBristol.org and on Radio Bristol’s free mobile app. Viewers may also tune in to watch through Radio Bristol’s Facebook page. \\nSpecial thanks to Blue Ridge PBS\\, and our underwriters including the City of Bristol\\, Tennessee; The Bristol Hotel; Eastman Credit Union; Permatile Concrete Products Company; and News 5 WCYB. Cruz Contreras is the latter. Raised between the rugged lines of Tennessee and the long shadows of Michigan\\, he’s spent nearly thirty years forging his path through the Americana musical landscape. He got his start at 15\\, backing his brother Billy Contreras—now a world-renowned fiddler—and fell in love with music in 1993\\, in a quiet room with Bill Monroe. From co-founding Robinella and the CCstringband to leading The Black Lillies\\, Cruz carved a sound as old as the hills and as wild as the road. He’s played Conan\\, the Opry\\, and festivals across the country\\, earning praise from Rolling Stone\\, NPR\\, and Vanity Fair. Now touring behind his solo debut Cosmico\\, he continues the journey with Cruz Contreras and The Black Lillies—blending Appalachian roots\\, cosmic country\\, and rock ’n’ roll. \\nwww.cruzcontreras.com \\n \\n\\nAbout Trousdale \\n \\nTrousdale is a powerhouse trio comprised of Quinn D’Andrea\\, Lauren Jones\\, and Georgia Greene. The group blends indie pop and country with tight harmonies at the heart of their music. For Trousdale\\, the ache of growing through change resonates deeply. Like certain long nights of childhood where growing pains can feel like every inch is aching\\, cramping\\, and pinching\\, Trousdale understands the feeling that comes with facing down existential anxiety and matters of the heart. “We can acknowledge the strides we’ve made and be grateful\\, but we’ve talked a lot about how tired we are\\,” Jones says with a laugh. “We’ve been thinking a lot about the tension that comes with change—wanting it\\, fighting it\\, embracing it—but learning to thrive in that moment.” On Trousdale’s LP\\, Growing Pains\\, the band works through those struggles to find strength\\, courage\\, and growth in each other. “From what was\\, something new can always grow\\,” D’Andrea says. \\nwww.trousdale.com \\n \\n\\nAbout The Band Loula \\n \\nNorth Georgia natives and longtime friends\\, The Band Loula—Malachi Mills and Logan Simmons—is poised for a big breakout this year with the release of their highly anticipated debut EP\\, Sweet Southern Summer. Produced by John Osborne (Brothers Osborne) with additional production from Greg Bieck (Little Big Town\\, etc)\\, the EP spotlights the duo’s powerful storytelling and unique swampgrass sound and consists of six tracks including their standout single\\, “Running Off The Angels\\,” which Billboard calls “An immensely promising release\\,” while All Country News declares\\, “a haunting\\, culturally charged ballad that cements their place as one of the genre’s most compelling new acts.” The Band Loula continues to garner widespread attention across the industry with their undeniable chemistry and near-blood harmonies\\, and recently made their Grand Ole Opry debut\\, for which they received a standing ovation. Powerful live performers\\, The Band Loula spent the summer on the road with Dierks Bentley and Zach Top as part of Bentley’s extensive Broken Branches Tour and has spent much of the past few years touring alongside artists such as Brothers Osborne\\, Ashley McBryde\\, Paul Cauthen\\, Elle King\\, Brent Cobb and Lukas Nelson. \\nwww.thebandloula.com \\n \\n\\nAbout Kris Truelsen and Country Casserole \\n \\nKris Truelsen has spent the better part of the last two decades touring across the U.S.\\, honing his craft as a songwriter and performer. With his latest project fronting Country Casserole\\, he leans into the rock n’ roll side of country music. It’s rowdy\\, loose and unmistakably Kris.
